A Field full of Rocks

Following the last few trails in the Hickory Run State Park there was one trail we had yet to explore. That being the Boulder Field Trail.

The trailhead area can become crowded and it is mainly due to Hawk Falls. There are plenty of areas where you can park on the road, which we did.

Right at the trailhead you are greeted by a stairway that leads to an open field, the trail however is covered with the exception of this short area. The trail is very nicely marked with yellow paint on the trees alongside the trail. While following the trail we encountered muddy areas which can be bypassed by utilizing the small trails off to the side. There are various forest landscapes to see as you walk through the trail. And it becomes slightly rocky much like the AT in some areas. The trail begins to narrow but this is due to increasing foliage.

What to expect

What to expect

The trail is about 3.1 miles long which makes it a 6.2 out and back trail and at one point you’ll feel like it’s going on forever, but then it’s there The Boulder Field. A field of rocks left from erosion from ice. The field is huge!

However if you are not that hiking type and wish to see it you can drive to a parking area to see the field. However I do recommend that you hike the trail, which made it feel like a nice reward after a long hike! We really enjoyed the hike although it wasn’t a vista or a waterfall it was nice to see The Boulder Field, a field of rocks. It was nice to get out and spend time out in the woods and nature. The trail itself was not crowded and for the most part it was an easy hike! I definitely recommend packing snacks and fluids although it was covered it was a long hike and it was toasty.

As always, Safe Travels.
